Mud running – the Tough Bloke Challenge

IMG_6367

Let’s take a step back shall we…..

I was up bright and early this morning to participate in the Tough Bloke Challenge.

Mud sweat tears …. An interesting race motto don’t you think…

According to the race director:

"Running is the core discipline of the Tough Bloke Challenge but competitors should be prepared for anything .. and don't expect to be clean when you come out on the other side – the taste of mud and sweat will be familiar by the end of the day"

Melbourne turned on a beautiful day, not too hot and not too cold, perfect race weather really.

Let’s just say I did not stay this clean for long.

The event consisted of a 6km trail run / obstacle course, set in the picturesque Wonga Park area.

Spectator vantage points were limited, but we did get the chance to ‘walk through’ the course before the race started and see a few of the obstacles.

To ensure that the trails didn’t get too overcrowded, we started in groups of 3, in 1 minute intervals.

The first part of the race was a 3km trail run – with some fairly steep and rocky hills thrown in for good measure.

I hit the first obstacle after 1.5km or so, a huge mud filled pit that we had to crawl through.

The result of the mud-pit encounter speaks for itself.

After the initial trail run, we tackled the obstacle course which included log balancing, wall climbing, monkey-bar swinging and tunnel crawling.

(I took these photos during the walk through. For obvious reasons the course was not camera (or spectator) friendly.

The second last obstacle was another tunnel – where I was greeted by a camera man….eek!

Quality footage I am sure ;)

The course finished with a rope traverse which tested my now weary arm muscles (and provided some attractive rope burns on my legs too!).

IMG_6349 IMG_6350  IMG_6352        I made it across, despite the little kids on the sideline blasting me with water guns. Just for another element of toughness….

Then all that was left was a short run to the finish line.

Overall this was a fantastic and well organised event. Definitely one that I would do again….but perhaps these old sneakers won’t be making a re-appearance.

Apparently approx 40% of the entrants were female, so I think the event may need a new name. The Tough Person Challenge perhaps?

After a LONG shower, my little bro and I headed out to spend the afternoon at the local footy.

Where I indulged in a little footy “food” … because that is what you do when you are at the footy ;)

What a sporty Saturday today has been!

Well I think it is time for this tough chick to go relax in the bath and have an early dinner. Oh and I think a load of very dirty laundry is calling my name?!

Happy baking :)

The first pic reminds me of an Orbit commercial. Not sure if you have that there, but they always show people very dirty and then they smile and have pearly white teeth :)
