Merry Christmas (in July)!

Sunday night is normally our family dinner night, but this week we decided to do something a little different.

I have always wanted to hold a Christmas in July dinner, so last night we did just that. All the Christmas food delights to be enjoyed during the cool Canberra winter, rather than the normal summer heat? Yes please!!

The menu was jam packed with wonderful Christmas goodies.

With each family member contributing to the Christmas spread.

I made bruschetta to start - with fresh tomatoes, garlic and basil.

Mr BBB's mum brought a lovely smoked ham.

Mr BBB's sister contributed a delightful roast pork - complete with crackling for those who are so inclined.

Also on the menu was a turkey roll, marinated in a light cranberry sauce.

Together with a heaping of roasted veggies wonderfully prepared by Mr BBB's niece - carrots, sweet potato, beetroot, potatoes and onions.

And a serving of carrots and asparagus on the side.

All together now.

I had a little of everything – and in true Christmas spirit – I went back for seconds of the roast veggies!

IMG_8776

I did, however, save room for what was an impressive looking dessert - prepared by niece no. 2!

IMG_8778

Chocolate mousse - layered on strawberries and blueberries.

So rich, but oh so delicious.

Coupled with some choc dipped strawberries - because strawberries were on special this week and I couldn’t resist making these little sweet treats.

Wow – it really was a fantastic evening – filled with great company and wonderful food (and made all the more easier by the power of delegation!).  With so much food, however, I can understand why we only have Christmas once a year ;)

What about you? What is your favourite "Christmas" meal?

PS – I received a few questions about the ANU Food Co-op – which I visited over the weekend. For my local readers - check out their website here - which gives you all the location details and product info!

Happy Baking :)

  4. Lawdie, those chocolate-covered strawberries look amazing. What a cool idea! My fave holiday dish would be my mom's dressing ... basically cornbread and sausage with a bunch of veggies and seasoning. It's too good!

  5. Its so weird to think that your Christmas is hot! We're always sad when it doesn't snow for Christmas morning here! Being Italian, growing up we had lasagna every year, but now my family changes it up. But somehow I usually sneak in a little lasagna at some point,

  6. I want Christmas in July. What a fun idea!

Our family meal during Christmas always involves ham, and I always beg for Turkey. I think I prefer Thanksgiving.

  7. I am so jealous of that meal! We usually do a prime rib dinner on Christmas Eve and it is DELICIOUS.

Plus, it is a meal to enjoy the time with your family. Nothing better than good food and good company right?

  10. How fun! Were there gifts exchanged? :)

I would have been all over that bruschetta and turkey roll, and chocolate strawberries... who am I kidding? I would have eaten it ALL!

  12. It's so funny that you have a hot Christmas! I WISH! I grew up in Chicago where we never had a hot day from September til March! We were lucky if it was hot in July haha! The spread looks completely lovely and delicious...such a great idea!

  17. We all get to pick our favoourite dishes, even if it's way too many. Last year we were too full after mains so at tea time we ust ate dessert! Christmas is the only time of the year we really buy ham, ao even if we get it in a week early, the rule is not to cut into it until The Day.

  19. good to see others celebrating christmas in july - and you have to have lots of great roast vegies like yours - I love it - I think my favourite christmas in july feast with the one with the vego hogs head when I did the full monty with decorations including even old christmas cards around the house - it was so much fun - but it is always hard to work in a christmas dinner in july no matter how good my intentions so I have only done it a few years - but sometimes manage to do a little something to acknowledge it (like the cupcakes this year)
