A Reese’s Confession…

I interrupt this scheduled blog-casting to make a confession.  A confession of the sweet treat variety…

Over the last few weeks I have developed a growing addiction for Reese's peanut butter cups.

My addiction has been aided by the fact that our local green grocer has recently decided to stock them. At the checkout. Yes, that's right. My supplier of all things broccoli and carrot is now also my supplier of 'not-so-nutrient-packed' Reese's peanut butter cups. Oh the cruel cruel world.

The only problem, well aside from the possible tooth decay and impending sugar high,  is that a packet of two is $3.00. Which will undoubtedly cause concern for my wallet, and possibly that of Mr BBB who has been sent in to purchase a packet or two at my begging for himself.

So this got me thinking. Could I make a variety at home that would rival those of the Reese's master?

There was only one way to find out.

'Cups' were prepared...

Chocolate was melted....

Peanut butter filling was made...

More chocolate was melted..

And an impatient wait began as I placed them in the fridge to set.

A few hours later….

And I had a bench top filled with homemade peanut butter cups!

Chocolate and peanut butter….

IMG_4663

Will I ever get sick of the combination??

IMG_4672

I doubt it!

Soon it was Reese's v BBB in the ultimate peanut butter cup showdown.

In the orange corner.....Reese’s!

IMG_4689

And in the red corner.....BBB PB cups!

Side by side…

Assessments were made of colour, size and shape....

IMG_4682

Texture....

And most importantly… taste!!!

IMG_4659

And the winner???

IMG_4674

Well I am calling it a draw.

At this stage.

I am, however, working on perfecting a recipe that will (hopefully) see the homemade variety find winning form. I’ll be sure to share it with you soon.

In the meantime, on cost,  at around 60c each the homemade BBB variety were definitely the winner!

I fear the only 'loser' in this situation might be my tooth enamel. Or my greengrocer's profit margin ;)

What about you? Is there a favourite treat that you have tried to recreate at home? What was the result?

Happy Baking :)

  1. Lisa, it's a long and slippery slope preparing these kind of treats at home. Once you get the hang of it, you can make them ANYTIME you crave them. With great power comes great responsibility....

  4. A couple of secrets to homemade PB cups:
-Texture-wise, you need to add butter to the melted chocolate. Just a little.
-Add powdered sugar and salt to the peanut butter filling to get the taste of the original.

  5. The only reason I haven't made a version of these myself yet is that I still have 3/4 of the 1.6kg bag I brought back from Costco in December :P

(P.S. Did you hear Costco might be opening in Canberra this year? Reese's forever and ever!)

  11. Reese's PB Cups are my favorite candy, tied with reeses pieces! I love the chocolate and pb combo. I've always wanted to make my own at home because then you can control what goes into them and how big they are... YUM!

  14. Happy new year Lisa! (I know I'm late!)

It's funny, but I DID get sick of the combination of peanut butter and chocolate when I was travelling in the states a few years back. Too many Trader Joe's peanut butter cups!! However, it's been a while now and I think I might be ready to give them another go!! xx

  15. I've never had a bought one but I loved the peanut butter cups I made myself a while back...am now thinking about making them again! But yep, the mint slice from Revel was an addiction that I've now managed to master myself and mine is better because you get a whole tray rather than 1 slice!

  16. That is so awesome! I love Reese's peanut butter cups as well. Yours look beautiful.

This would be a lot of fun to try at home. I am thinking some really good dark chocolate and a nice chunky peanut butter would be really tasty! :)

  17. I don't think I will ever get sick of chocolate and peanut butter. I tried to recreate marshmallow bark at home, and it just wasn't the same.
