A travel announcement…

Training: Upper body weights / abs

Today's workout was completed in the gym, doing upper body weights / abs. With the Half Ironman now behind me, I am really enjoying adding extra variety to my workouts without the training program pressures of 'must run/swim/bike X kms today'.

In saying that, I do have a Sprint triathlon race coming up this Sunday, although I am still undecided whether I will do the full Sprint or drop down to the shorter race. Perhaps I will hit the pool tomorrow and see how my swim fitness has held up before I make the final decision?

---------------------

My evening adventure was also a little different!

I met up with my mother in law, sister in law and nieces to watch the.....

P1070048

Baseball!

P1070043

Yes baseball. In Australia. In Canberra even.

Complete with smuggled in snacks!

P1070041

After a trip to America last year, these gals have grown to LOVE their baseball and invited me to come and watch the Canberra Cavalry v Brisbane game with them.

** warning – dodgy point and shoot photos ahead**

P1070050

P1070044

This was my very first time watching the baseball and, I must say, it was quite a different atmosphere than the AFL or rugby. But, after having the rules explained to me, it ended up being quite the fun gals night.

P1070047

It also ended up being quite the exciting game, with Canberra stealing the win in the last innings!

---------------------------

And, who knows, perhaps this newfound baseball knowledge will come in handy owing to our exciting future travel plans...

For a while now, Mr BBB and I have thought about taking another overseas trip. We have been lucky enough to previously travel (by campervan!) through Europe, trek in Thailand and snow board in Japan. Needless to say, we aren't the 'resort' kind of travellers ;)

In the last few years, a close friend of mine has moved to Tennessee, and some close friends of Mr BBB moved back to Dallas. So, the next destination on our holiday wish list was kinda obvious....the USA!

And, it seems our wishes may come a reality in June or July this year!

While we would love to take longer (particularly given how BIG the USA is!) we will probably only have 3 or so weeks to fit in as much as possible. So, at this stage, my 'rough' 3 week itinerary looks something like this:

  • New York
  • Fly to Tennessee to spend time with friends
  • Drive to Dallas (taking a few days to explore along the way)
  • Dallas (to spend time with friends)
  • Fly to LA to spend a few days (including Las Vegas perhaps?)
  • Drive / bus to San Francisco
  • Sonoma / wine country (I think you can guess whose idea this was)
  • Fly back to Australia (probably via LA).

Having never been to the US before, I would be grateful for advice from any US readers (or people who have travelled there before) of places we should see and what to do. Our only real constraint is time....although we may be able to add a few extra days ;) And, of course, we are always looking for lunch or dinner (hehe or running) buddies if you happen to live nearby!

Once we have our plan a little more finalised - it will hopefully mean we can book our flights.  Yes, BBB is coming to the USA and I can't wait!

Happy Baking :)

  5. I am so excited about your trip to the US. I live in Connecticut which is right next to New York. I'm totally willing to take the train and meet up for a run.

  6. You will love it! I give a vote for the Warner Brothers VIP tour (takes about 2 hours) and in San Francisco we did a great bus tour that takes off from the wharf, it basically does a big loop and you can get on and off however many times you want over 48 hours think, you get to see all the sights!

The drive from LA - San Fran is also amazing, We broke it up over 2 days but if you wanted more time to stop and look around, 3 days would be ideal

  7. My personal opinion on Vegas is don't go for long if you go. I'm not a huge fan. Maybe go for a night. It's very artificial and fake.

  8. Wow that sounds like such an awesome trip!! Are you SURE you don't want to see the nations capital!?

  9. Yeah I'm with Beth, but I'm biased because I live in the DC area...and I would LOVE for you to come here. But yeah, NYC and wine country are both obvious Yes's. Since you'll be in NY, I feel like stopping into DC would be the obvious choice on your way to Tennessee (again, biased!)You can take a bus from NY to DC and fly from DC to TN. (did I mention I'm biased? And I live right by Reagan National Airport??)
Vegas is overrated (in my opinion) so I wouldn't spend too much time there either. If you want to do anything in the desert, I'd say go see the Grand Canyon over Vegas. It's absolutely gorgeous...and you'll get an amazing workout walking down and back!
    I'm so excited for you!

  10. How exciting! LA to San Francisco is a pretty drive along the coast :) I'm just a little south of LA!

  11. Hehe I can't believe you've never watched baseball before :)

Yay for your trip!! Super exciting!! You'll have so much fun! I've been to Sanfran and LA before but never Dallas, Tennessee, Vegas or NY!! WOOOOO!!!

  12. Exciting! I love reading your blog, you gave me the inspiration to get back into running races since finishing grad school...well until my ankle rolled last month.

But, I moved to San Francisco last year and have lived in LA for 6 years before that. So if you want any advice on where to go/do, send me an email (mcartwri@ucla.edu). I'm sure you will have a ton of advice though.

    My favorites in LA:
-the beach in LA (I would stay at the inn at playa del rey...they have bikes and you can ride the whole stretch between Long Beach and Malibu). And you are in this small beach community that I miss so much. There aren't many restaurants there but they are all really good.
-Hollywood is a must, you can either go hike up to in Griffith Park (to the hollywood sign and look at the amazing views) or see the sign from a mall that is on the corner of sunset/hollywood blvds. Also where they hold the oscars.
-the Getty Museum is amazing, they have 2 and both are well worth it. The views alone...

    Favs in SF:
-bike from the Embarcadaro to Tiburon (http://www.blazingsaddles.com/) and take the ferry back. You get amazing views of the city and it is so much fun!
-there are some great museums...DeYoung (also has a tall tower with great views of the city)
-have drinks at The View (bar at top floor of SF Marriot Marquis on 4th street). Better yet, stay there.
-If you have time, go to Monterey (south of SF), and go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium -- SO COOL there!!

    Wine Country...
-everything is amazing. We like to stay in Healdsburg, CA at the Dry Creek Inn, Best Western. I know it's not fancy but it's nice and clean and much cheaper than those super expensive places...
-My husband and I think the best way to do wine country is to bike it...are you sensing a theme? ha...I suggest, http://www.winecountrybikes.com/ (we tried them once and LOVED it).
-as for eating in wine country...cyrus (expensive and amazing), dry creek kitchen, zin

If you guys are interested in the other valley (Napa) then stay in Yountville (very pricey but fun town). You should go to Bouchon Bakery (YUM) and if you have money and a reservation...go to the French Laundry (really really pricey). We usually don't go up to Napa because the wine is no better than Sonoma Valley (in our opinion), the crowds are smaller, it's more personable, and far cheaper.

I hope this helps you a little. As you can tell I'm a West Coast Girl from the USA. We are also originally from Seattle...which is better than LA in the summertime...just a thought...

    Cheers,
    Megan

  13. How exciting!!

My family and my husband's family lives in the New York area, and sometimes we are there visiting during June/July... so there's a small chance you might be around at the same time!

Anyway, some fun things to do in NYC:
    1. Natural History Museum (plus planetarium) http://www.amnh.org/
    2. Met Museum (http://www.metmuseum.org/)
    3. Angelica Kitchen (GREAT vegetarian, natural foods restaurant)

  14. Wow, that's a lot of driving. Even by North American standards. Sounds like a lovely tour, though!

  15. What an exciting trip! You MUST do the Napa Valley wineries :)

  16. I've never really been anywhere in this country, so I have no advice! But if for any reason you're swinging by Cleveland, Ohio, I'd love to hang out!

  17. Fantastic! And now is the perfect time with the Aussie dollar so strong too. No matter where you live, I think it's easy to get a bit blase about it. If you really want to go somewhere,(like Los Vegas) give it a go. The ultra fakeness is part of the charm to us fascinated Aussies as we don't have anything like it here to reference it with. Have an amazing time, and don't forget half the fun is in the planning.

  18. That is quite a trip you have planned! Yay, you're going to be in NYC - where I am! There is so much to do in NYC! I have a list of some of my favorite NYC places/things to do on my blog, but if you want any suggestions for something in particular, I would love to help!

  19. That is so exciting. Which part of Tennessee are you coming to, I am in Knoxville Tennessee, if you'll be coming anywhere close by I would love to meet ya!

    Do you watch Cricket?

  20. Having travelled to both LA and NY and cycled in both- NY is my favourite. Shakespeare in the Park, free performance in Central Park by exception actors is on while you are there. The whole experience from queuing for tickets (get in early) to the performance itself is one big party.

  21. I lived in the US when I was very wee and went back at 17- LOVED it there and can't wait to go back. My sister is in Portland- the capital of vegan food and BEER :)

  22. I love the US too, so this trip sounds amazing, lucky ducky you :)

  23. That sounds awesome! I love America. I did a road trip for 4 weeks with some friends back in 2003 from NY down to Miami and then across to Denver (via New Orleans) and it was the best ever. I also did Camp America in 2005 near Santa Cruz and that was a really beautiful area. Make sure you go to Cold Stone Ice Cream, way way better than cold rock.
