Hail Caesar (Salad)

Training: Body Pump

Tonight’s Mystery Box ingredient was not one I was excited about…

IMG_5308

Yes anchovies….

IMG_5428

In all their disgusting salty hairy glory…

 IMG_5430

Ugh.

I cannot stand anchovies, probably due to their texture more than anything. But, in the spirit of the Mystery Box, they had to make an appearance in tonight’s dinner.

But what to make?

How could I serve anchovies in a way that would hide their horrible texture?

Then I had a lightbulb moment….Caesar Salad! Where the anchovies could be hidden in the dressing…

IMG_5439

And not left whole.

I decided to make a Caesar ‘based’ dressing. I say ‘based’ because it did not contain any eggs, as the traditional Caesar dressing does.

IMG_5444

Rather, I ‘healthified’ my version, relying on natural yoghurt, tahini and a dash of mayo to provide the creaminess.

IMG_5440

Combined with garlic, anchovies, dijon mustard and lemon juice for an extra flavour kick. No oil required.

Then it was on to the next star ingredient of the salad.

IMG_5432

Which did contain oil.

GF garlic croutons. GF bread, cubed, and sprinkled with my favourite garlic olive oil.

IMG_5434

Baked until crispy.

IMG_5459

Time to layer. Starting with lettuce and celery…

IMG_5445

Bacon and croutons…

IMG_5460

Grilled chicken breast..

 IMG_5448

And a sprinkle of parmesan.

 IMG_5447

And let’s not forget the Caesar dressing (served on the side because I hate when salads are drowned in dressing!)

IMG_5453

A new take on an ol’ classic.

hehe and just for comparison sake – Mr BBB asked me to post his salad...

IMG_5461

Same ingredients – different plating styles lol.

Although, I can assure you, by the end both our plates looked like a lot more like this:

IMG_5464

Hail Caesar (Salad) indeed!

Hail Caesar Dressing (serves 4)

  • 1/2 cup natural yoghurt
  • 1 tbs tahini
  • 1 tbs mayonnaise
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 anchovy fillets
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 1 tbs dijon mustard
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan
  1. Process all ingredients in a food processor until thick and creamy.

What about you? Are you a fan of anchovies?

Happy Baking :)

  4. Tahini and yoghurt - brilliant! This looks worlds better than the caesar salad I had at a cafe in Woden just before Christmas - it was so bad that I vowed never to return to that place (the service was awful too)

  9. Never had anchovy's ...I should try just to say I did :)

Never really had traditional Caesar salad either...but if I can put cheese or bacon it, I'll eat any salad :) WITH veggies of course!

  12. Nope no anchovies for me, I think I can take them only in the Caesar dressing.

  13. The quality of your dishes is amazing. Beautiful pictures. That salad looks so delicious!

For me, I like anchovies stuffed inside of an olive, floating in a martini! :)

  16. I hate anchovies when they're whole. I tried to like them on pizza, but the texture if just awful. However, disguised in a dressing such as this, I think will be fine! I've had them stuffed in olives which was surprisingly nice. Your salad looks fantastic :D

  17. the caesar's both look delicious!! it's funny because my BF is way more into plating than I am..he works in a fancy restaurant so it's me who gets the grief for less beautiful dishes!
I hope you have a fabulous friday!

  19. I love love love anchovies! You can add them to stews and casseroles as well, they break down and just add delishiness, not fishiness. Yumm.. Ceasar salad is one of our most popular luncheon dishes in the restaurant, but it really is terribly unhealthy-but yummy- the way we do it. Your way has heaps less calories and would be just as yummy.
