Tonight’s Mystery Box ingredient was not one I was excited about…
Yes anchovies….
In all their disgusting salty hairy glory…
Ugh.
I cannot stand anchovies, probably due to their texture more than anything. But, in the spirit of the Mystery Box, they had to make an appearance in tonight’s dinner.
But what to make?
How could I serve anchovies in a way that would hide their horrible texture?
Then I had a lightbulb moment….Caesar Salad! Where the anchovies could be hidden in the dressing…
And not left whole.
I decided to make a Caesar ‘based’ dressing. I say ‘based’ because it did not contain any eggs, as the traditional Caesar dressing does.
Rather, I ‘healthified’ my version, relying on natural yoghurt, tahini and a dash of mayo to provide the creaminess.
Combined with garlic, anchovies, dijon mustard and lemon juice for an extra flavour kick. No oil required.
Then it was on to the next star ingredient of the salad.
Which did contain oil.
GF garlic croutons. GF bread, cubed, and sprinkled with my favourite garlic olive oil.
Baked until crispy.
Time to layer. Starting with lettuce and celery…
Bacon and croutons…
Grilled chicken breast..
And a sprinkle of parmesan.
And let’s not forget the Caesar dressing (served on the side because I hate when salads are drowned in dressing!)
A new take on an ol’ classic.
hehe and just for comparison sake – Mr BBB asked me to post his salad...
Same ingredients – different plating styles lol.
Although, I can assure you, by the end both our plates looked like a lot more like this:
Hail Caesar (Salad) indeed!
Hail Caesar Dressing (serves 4)
- 1/2 cup natural yoghurt
- 1 tbs tahini
- 1 tbs mayonnaise
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 anchovy fillets
- 1/2 lemon, juiced
- 1 tbs dijon mustard
- 1/4 cup grated parmesan
- Process all ingredients in a food processor until thick and creamy.
What about you? Are you a fan of anchovies?
Happy Baking :)

Haha, very nice plating! Looks really good. I'll have to get that garlic oil.
ReplyDeleteYou could have made puttanesca too!
I'm going to try your dressing. Looks fantastic! Now I love anchovies, especially on pizza, in their salty bony glory!
ReplyDeleteI love anchoivies. On pizza is best, like Liz said. But of course, your recipes always look divine!

Tahini and yoghurt - brilliant! This looks worlds better than the caesar salad I had at a cafe in Woden just before Christmas - it was so bad that I vowed never to return to that place (the service was awful too)
ReplyDeleteUmmmmmmm.......no way. You are so adventurous, sister!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Caesar salad!
ReplyDeleteI keep forgetting its hot there since I am freezing here! But your salad looks delish-very creative dressing!
ReplyDeleteI hate anchovies, but loooove ceasar salad!
ReplyDeleteHow lovely! I'm not sure I'm brave enough for anchovies, but that is a gorgeous salad!
ReplyDeleteI am not a fan of anchovies, but that could have something to do with my vegetarianism. lol
ReplyDeleteNever had anchovy's ...I should try just to say I did :)
ReplyDeleteNever really had traditional Caesar salad either...but if I can put cheese or bacon it, I'll eat any salad :) WITH veggies of course!
love your take on caesar dressing!!
ReplyDeleteI used to really like anchovies! They are great on pizza :)
ReplyDeleteNope no anchovies for me, I think I can take them only in the Caesar dressing.
ReplyDeleteThe quality of your dishes is amazing. Beautiful pictures. That salad looks so delicious!
ReplyDeleteFor me, I like anchovies stuffed inside of an olive, floating in a martini! :)
wow, I am so impressed -this looks straight from a restaurant!
ReplyDeleteI love caesar salad and I love anchovies! I have to have soft boiled egg in my caesar though. Yum!
ReplyDeleteI hate anchovies when they're whole. I tried to like them on pizza, but the texture if just awful. However, disguised in a dressing such as this, I think will be fine! I've had them stuffed in olives which was surprisingly nice. Your salad looks fantastic :D
ReplyDeletethe caesar's both look delicious!! it's funny because my BF is way more into plating than I am..he works in a fancy restaurant so it's me who gets the grief for less beautiful dishes!
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a fabulous friday!
xoxo
ooh i LOVE anchovies! only a recent love, though. You know i never ever seem to make or order caesar salads. shame, they look so tasty! love yours, great work.
ReplyDeleteHeidi xo
I love love love anchovies! You can add them to stews and casseroles as well, they break down and just add delishiness, not fishiness. Yumm.. Ceasar salad is one of our most popular luncheon dishes in the restaurant, but it really is terribly unhealthy-but yummy- the way we do it. Your way has heaps less calories and would be just as yummy.
