Sticky date and lamb tagine

Argh! So apparently this evening when I told my hairdresser ‘medium blonde’, he heard ‘dark brown’. Yes, yours truly is now sporting a rather darker ‘do’ that will certainly take some getting used to…..*sigh* although he assures me it will fade lighten up?!

We’ll see….

Brown hair aside, there was one brown that I was looking forward to this evening….

My sticky date and lamb tagine. Take 2.

As you may remember, last week I made a slow cooked lamb and date tagine for dinner. Well, I am pleased to report that last night I re-jigged the recipe and now have one that I am pleased to share with you!

And, with the weather turning frigid in Canberra, I suspect you will see lots more slow cooked meals on this blog over the next few months.

I really enjoyed the flavours in my previous version, but it was just a little too sweet for my liking. And, while this version still retains the sweetness in its sticky date gravy, I lessened the quantity of dates just ever so slightly.

And, given our fridge was a little vegetable bare (unlike last time….)

I served tonight's tagine on a bed of brown rice instead.

Sprinkled with almonds and fresh parsley.

Delish. But, be warned, this dish is rather sweet so a little goes a long way!

Sticky date and lamb tagine (serves 4)

(adapted from “Tagine”)

  • 1 tbs olive oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 tsp ginger, minced
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tsp ground turmeric
  • 800g diced lamb shoulder
  • 200g pitted dates, halved
  • 2 tbs flaked almonds
  • Handful fresh parsley
  1. Heat olive oil in a large pan over a medium heat.
  2. Add the onions and spices and cook (stirring) until the onion has softened slightly and the spices are fragrant.
  3. Add the lamb, and stir well to ensure that it is coated in the spices. Add just enough water to cover the meat and bring to the boil. Cover, lower heat, and simmer for 1.5 hours.
  4. Remove lid. Add dates and simmer for 30 minutes or until the tagine has thickened.
  5. Scatter the tagine with flaked almonds and parsley, and serve with rice, couscous or vegetables.

  1. If I ate lamb I'd be all over this recipe! I love sweet sauces! :)

The blog looks great by the way! I've been so busy this is the first chance I've had to check it out!

  2. I only highlight my hair, so I have never had color failures. But this one time, the lady cut my hair uneven, one side shorter than the other and she did not even care.

Oh and I'm not allowed to cut Rish's hair.... ask him why if we ever meet...

  4. Oh, you can't tell us that and not show us! I'm sure you look wonderful :) I was really excited about getting my hair dyed for the first time for my 22nd birthday party, and after several hours...nothing. It looked no difference. They were good and had me come back to redo it, but not in time for my party :(

  8. I've always wanted to try lamb.. it's pretty sad that I never have! The only lamb people eat in the States is in gyros lol.

Sorry about not getting the hair color you wanted.. I bet it still looks great anyways :)

  9. I promise it will fade.

I started to go darker about 9 months ago (by choice and from platinum blonde) and about 3 weeks after it's been done it really starts to fade.

If you really don't like it, have a chat to your hairdresser pronto, but I'm sure it's gorgeous.

  10. I really like the look of this! think i'll try it next week.
Your poor hair, maybe it will really suit you after you get over the shock. I am trying to psyche myself to get my hair chopped off.

  12. I have had tons of bad hair colors! If it's really bad I try to cover it with another color, but usually I just try to cope and style it in such a way that it doesn't look terrible.

  13. I love the sweetness of the fruit with lamb, they go so well together.
I just dyed my dark brown hair hot pink, a bet t o myself after my birthday, but am trying to talk myself into going ultra scruffy short, bleached then the pink for ultimate shock value. Hmmm..... maybe a bit too far?
