Picture ledge feature wall

Perhaps it is because I have been spending more time at home recently (owing to maternity leave and then working from home), but I find myself constantly thinking of various improvements we can make.

And, as we built our home, we do have that ever-longed-for blank canvas. A blank canvas that we are slowly starting to fill.

Like this space, for instance.

A rather dull wall space above a buffet, sitting at the end of our kitchen bench.

But it is dull no more, as we recently took it from this..

To this!

With the help of two handy Ikea picture ledges.

For quite a while, I had been planning to buy a piece of art to hang in this space. I wanted something colourful, and relatively modern, to add a bit of ‘cheer’ to the room.

But, despite my searches, I struggled to find a piece that (a) was the right size and (b) that I liked.

Then I came across some Pinterest inspiration in the form of picture ledges, and this project started to take shape. Suddenly the idea of an inter-changeable art / photo wall seemed so much more appealing and appropriate.  Particularly given this is a space we walk past multiple times a day, and is one of the first things you see when you enter our living room.

With a Sydney trip already planned, we scheduled an Ikea visit to pick up the ledges. Later that week, while Mr BBB handled the ‘construction’ side of things (with my wonderful supervision haha), I worked on the first set of frames to grace the shelves.

In our collection, so far…

Some artwork (also from Ikea), a photograph I took in LA, and one of my favourite pictures of Charlotte / Mr BBB).

(Another of my photographs from LA, one from New York, a postcard from Paris, and a print from Ikea).

What I love the most about this wall, aside from the colours, is that I can change how it looks as often as I like, just by changing the photos and prints. Allowing for my favourite photos to get some ‘wall time’, rather than be hidden away on my computer hard drive.

A wall that will grow as our family grows, I suspect!

What about you? Do you like to frame and display your photos?

  2. Hi Lisa,
What a fantastic idea and you're right, it really does solve the problem of family photographs hiding away.
    Thank you for the inspiration!

  5. I love this idea! This is what Jesse and I want to do when we have our own place - my parents have never been ones for photographs on the wall (we only have a few on display in our house on shelves) but as a photographer I want photos everywhere, haha.

  6. That looks great! It really improves the wall. We have one on a big bare well. Hubby hated the idea of it at first but once it was up, he loved it (thankfully, or I wouldn't have heard the end of it :P).
