Coca cola chicken wings

Yes. You read that right. Coca cola chicken wings.

aka our ‘dinner’ a little while ago.  Let me explain.

One evening, we sat watching Masterchef. Normally known for the inventive dishes, creative ingredients, food challenges and, lets be honest, too many tears. But on this occasion, it was a masterclass by none other than Matt Preston, cooking coca cola chicken wings. You can find the recipe here.

I did not even need to look over at Mr BBB to know what he was thinking. Eyes wide. A small smile. And then the request was made.

“We have to make these”.

Truthfully, chicken wings are not my favourite. I think it has something to do with my meat + bone aversion. But Mr BBB indulges my kitchen cravings all too often, so I figured I could indulge him this one.

And so it came to be that these ingredients were set out on our kitchen bench one afternoon.

Sugar and more sugar. Poured over the wings, and cooked for 3.5 hours.

Turning my best baking dish into something of a sticky cola mess.

Chicken wing anyone?

To balance out the sweetness, I also made a simple fried rice.

Brown rice, silverbeet, asparagus, carrot and capsicum. Wok-fried with tofu, peas, egg and a splash of sesame oil and tamari.

Much better.

Probably unsurprisingly, I was not a fan of the chicken wings – they were too sweet and fiddly for me. But Mr BBB loved them and gobbed most of the plate.

I think they would make a tasty appetiser for a party, so perhaps they’ll make another appearance in the BBB household at some point…

What about you? Are you a fan of chicken wings?

  1. I'm with you, I cannot be bothered with a meat to bone ratio like that. Too much work for not enough payoff. That said, the few times that I have actually bothered with the fiddly sticky mess it has been yummy, just a pain in the neck!

  2. Mmmmm, we love our chicken wings here! I have never seen Coca-cola used in a wing recipe. That is a very creative, and it looks delicious!

Along these lines, I've seen some recipes out of the state of Texas that use Dr. Pepper in a basting sauce for pork ribs.

  3. I really can't do chicken wings, because they're what we've fed our dog every night for the past 14 years.

  5. Masterchef has a lot to answer for!

Like you, I don't eat meat off the bone and hate the idea of nomming around a wing. Glad your husband liked them:)

  8. I'd take the fried rice too - but at least it is an easy meal to make for Mr BBB - which is good for a meal for one or for a party - am sure they would get guests talking

  9. Sugary chicken wings don't appeal but I adore honeycomb but have been scared to try and make it myself. Please share your adventures with making it.

  10. I like the thighs, hubby and daughter2 like drumsticks, daughter1 likes the breast ,so whole chickens are best. But we ALL love wings! The coke looks like it caramelized well, but I think the rice was the perfect accompaniment :)
